UNIBEN suspends SUG over attack on Edo LP guber candidate Akpata

Following the violent assault on Barrister Olumide Akpata, the Labour Get together candidate for the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, the administration of College of Benin, UNIBEN, has suspended the scholars’ union authorities of the establishment indefinitely.

DAILY POST stories that Akpata was attacked by suspected political thugs on the college’s senior employees membership on April 12, 2024.

It was gathered that the Labour Get together’s governorship candidate was invited by the college’s senior employees membership for an interactive session.

Within the incident, the scholars’ union president was stated to have led among the college students to invade the venue of the occasion.

It was learnt that the scholars allegedly demanded a halt of the occasion, claiming that they (college students’ union) weren’t duly knowledgeable of the occasion.

The scholars have been stated to have behaved unruly on the occasion and within the course of, rough-handled lots of the employees, together with a member of the Tutorial Employees of the Universities, ASUU, who was reportedly crushed to a pulp and ultimately rushed to a hospital.

Following the incident, the administration of the college arrange a panel to research the incident with a view to unraveling the crux of the problem.

On the finish of the investigation, the College’s Registrar, A.A. Bobola, introduced the indefinite suspension of the scholars’ union in an announcement on Monday April 29, 2024.

The assertion reads:

“After due consideration of the report by the Administration, the Vice Chancellor has authorised the suspension of the College’s College students Union.

“The suspension which is indefinite, takes instant impact, that’s, from in the present day, Monday twenty ninth April, 2024.

“Accordingly, all officers of the College students’ Union are to handover all properties of the Union of their possession to the Dean, College students’ Affairs not later 4.00 pm on Tuesday 30 April, 2024.

“Within the interim, a caretaker committee composed of representatives of schools, colleges and institutes has been authorised to coordinate college students’ actions in the course of the interval of suspension.

“The above directive of the Vice Chancellor is hereby communicated for the eye of the College neighborhood and compliance of the erstwhile union officers as acceptable.”
